Skin discoloration on the face can sometimes be a nuisance for both men and women. No matter how many scrubs, creams, or makeup products you’ve tried, those marks are still there on your face, staring right back at you. At first, you may not know what it is—dirt, old makeup, paint?! And then you realize that it is melasma. But what’s next? Figuring out exactly what melasma is and how to treat it can help to ease your mind and give you that boost of confidence you may have been missing.
What Is Melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition that affects both men and women; however, it is more common in women. Women in their 20s to 40s, especially pregnant women and/or women who take oral contraceptives or hormones, are more susceptible to developing this skin disorder. Melasma appears as brown or grayish patches on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin. This skin condition is typically caused by sun exposure or hormones.
What Chemical Peel Is Best to Remove My Melasma?
While some melasma conditions resolve on their own, some do not. At SoCal Cool Body, we offer SkinMedica®’s Rejuvenize Peel™, which is appropriate for moderate to severe skin imperfections. During your Rejuvenize Peel™, your skin is saturated with the chemical solution to thoroughly dry out and agitate the visible layer of skin (epidermis and uppermost section of the underlying dermal layers). This process causes the treated skin to flake away as new skin rises to the surface, revealing younger, healthier, and clearer skin.
This chemical peel takes about one hour to complete; however, since the Rejuvenize Peel™ is self-neutralizing, the chemicals do not go away until you wash them off, which is typically six hours after the solution is applied. Patients report sensitivity or a warm feeling and mild tingling during the peel.
Over the first two days, visible peeling will take place, and the most obvious peeling and flaking will occur on the third day. Peels are a great skin care treatment to undergo that does not cause serious discomfort or require significant downtime.
Once the dead skin is removed, patients can look forward to smoother, more luminous skin. Chemical peels produce noticeable improvements after one peel, but the most effective results appear after three to six peels. You will receive a customized treatment plan during your consultation with the experts at SoCal Cool Body.
How Can I Protect My Skin?
It is very important to protect your skin after your Rejuvenize Peel™. Your skin is fresh and new, so shielding your skin from environmental factors and everyday debris will help to prolong your results. Some after-care steps to partake in include:
- Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser. (Do not scrub or use any exfoliating products.)
- Moisturizing: Apply moisturizer as often as needed to relieve dryness, tightness, and itching.
- Protecting: Apply sunscreen throughout the day and avoid direct sunlight.
Continuing these steps after each chemical peel, as well as moisturizing and protecting with sunscreen daily, can truly help to give you the vibrant, glowing skin you’ve been looking for.
